Remote Interview Best Practices

  • Audio

    • Make sure you’re in a quiet place

    • You can wear headphones, or not. Many have a built in microphone.

    • Speaking of microphones, you can either use the built-in microphone in your device, plug in an external mic, or use the mic in your headphones

  • Lighting

    • One of the keys to a good looking video is that your face is lit. This can be a lamp, or positioning yourself facing the window for natural light

    • It is important that you are not backlit—when the light behind you is brighter than the light illuminating your face. Make sure that the opposite is true, more light (or even light) on your face than behind you.

    Setup and Camera

    • You can use a webcam, your phone, or an external camera plugged into your computer. If you are using an external camera and are unfamiliar with it, reach out, we can help.

    • Position your camera about eye level

    • If using an external camera, position your laptop directly under the camera lens

    • Most external cameras have better resolution than most webcams

    • Frame your shot so that you are centered with your head occupying the upper part of the frame, while making sure not to have the top of your head cut off by the top.

  • Computer & Connection

    • Ensure that you have a stable internet connection. Test it here.

    • It helps to close other programs so your computer can process more quickly

    • Temporarily turn off your computer's screensaver or its sleep mode setting.
